5th grade DRAGONS ROCK!!!

What an amazing day it was for THIS Dragon! All of my 5th grade friends showed up and cheered for SFA and "After High School Comes College". The NISD 5th grade Dragons all filled out commitment 2020 cards pledging to continue their education AFTER they graduate from high school. That is too too great!!
All I can say to my 5th grade Dragon friends is WOW! I am one proud Dragon today. So many people said how very good you all were (duh, of course), and how impressed they were by you and all those adults that came with you (duh, of course).   Even the MAYOR came to see yall today, you must be something pretty special!!

I hope that you all have a great Thanksgiving break!

A BIG week ahead!

What a big week this is going to be for my friends at Nac ISD. Tomorrow ALL of the 8th graders at BOTH middle schools will be going to the SFA Coliseum for a HUGE career fair. There will be many different visitors representing the Nacogdoches area businesses. They will visit with students about the work that they do and what education it takes to do so. This event is sponsored by the Nacogdoches Chamber and Generation TX.

Then on Friday ALL of the 5th graders in the district from ALL of the elementary schools will be going to the SFA Coliseum for the After High School Comes College event. It will be so neat to see all of the students in their SFA shirts, and they will all be committing that they will continue their education after they graduate from high school. To Duke, this is like an early Christmas. Can you believe it...over 450 5th graders talking about college and their future!! WOO-HOO is all I can say!

So my college vocabulary word for this week was going to be BOOKS (you know those things you have to buy in college that are really really expensive, AND you have to read them too) for the letter "B", but because of all these great things happening I think it should be BELIEVE! Believe that you are meant for great things, and believe that you are going to continue your education after high school, and believe that you are responsible for your success, believe that you can do it!

"A" is for Admissions, Applications and Angelina

Can you find me?
Well I traveled as "Little Duke" to Angelina College, the campus was very easy to find, it was right off of Highway 59.  I was curious to find out more about the college and the college admissions and application process. I was able to find out a lot form visiting with the folks in the Admissions and Enrollment Services department. They showed me how to get on the computer and fill out an electronic college application and I even had my picture take for my student ID!!

My AC Student ID

Angelina has 27 occupational programs, certificates and associate of applied sciences degrees. They have 25 different clubs and organizations, fine arts programs as well as Men's and Women's basketball. There seems to be something for everyone.
I am sitting on the "N" for Nacogdoches

Filling out an online application is not hard at all!
After I finished my visit with the Admissions office I went down stairs to the student book store, man there are a lot of books in there. Not only were there books, there were pens, binders, calculators and anything else a Dragon might need to be successful in his classes. The coolest thing though was all of the AC gear I could get to show my school spirit and be stylin while I was doing it!
The bookstore has so many things to choose from!

One of the best things about Angelina College is that it is so close to my home town of Nacogdoches, TX. What a great way for a Dragon to start his transition to college. They even have classes that are taught in Nacogdoches, how easy it that!
Thanks again to my friends at AC that showed me around and made me feel at home!

College Alphabet

We all know that it is important to learn our alphabet and vocabulary words, right? I thought it would be a good idea to learn some college vocabulary!! This is how it is gonna go... I will share with you a college vocabulary word, and maybe even a college for every letter in the alphabet. Yep every letter, all 26 of them!
"A" is the first letter in the alphabet, so our FIRST college vocabulary word will be:
ADMISSIONS! It just so happens that one of the FIRST things that you need to do when you are getting ready to go to college is go to Admissions. Admissions is where you go to get your college APPLICATION (sorry I snuck in another one). When you find a college that you think will be a good fit you must fill out an application where they will ask for your grades, as well as extra-curricular activities, including sports and community service. Most college applications are completed online.

"A" is for Angelina College (AC), which is right down the road in Lufkin. Yep you guessed it, I am going back on the road to visit Angelina College http://www.angelina.edu/. Angelina is a local community college that has all sorts of certification programs and associate degrees. In fact I heard on the news this morning that there is a great need in East Texas (That is us) there is a great need for skilled and certified workers, can you believe there is a shortage?? (that means not very many) I bet I can learn all about this at AC.
So off I go to visit the home of the Roadrunner...

LumberJack FOOTBALL!!!

I cannot believe I am here, maybe I will see a Lumberjack!
What a great time I have been having. I have been in a bunch of BIG buildings full of lots of classrooms and students. There are so many different programs of study offered at this school. You can be anything from a TEACHER to a Forest Ranger. You could go to school for 4 years and get a Bachelors degree, or a few more years and get a Masters degree, or a real long time and write a bunch of papers and get a Doctorate degree...Dr. Dragon, I like the sounds of that! If you cannot decide right away they have people that you can talk to in admissions and the counseling department that can help you figure it all out.
Talk about a big place to watch FOOTBALL. I went to the SFA stadium today and got to walk in and see the actual football field where the Lumberjacks play football. There were rows and rows of seats.
If you want to check out their athletic site it is filled with information about football as well as all of the other boys and girls sports that they have at SFAhttp://sfajacks.cstv.com/.
I even thought that I would try to watch a game, but they will be out of town until 11/3/12.
I enjoyed a quick PB&J at the Duck Pond
Right next to the field is the Duck Pond. There is an actual pond with ducks and places to sit and think, or study, or have a picnic.
I have really enjoyed my visit here at SFA, and am glad that I got to share some things with you. If you want more information be sure to visit the schools official website www.sfasu.edu
or I bet that you have some SFA alumni at your school that would love to tell you about their       Alma mater...ask your teacher, I dare ya!
Keep watching my Blog to see where I go next!

SFA really is the place to be!!

This place is HUGE!

WOW!!! What a cool place. The student center http://www.sfasu.edu/studentservices/ was just the right place for a Dragon to hang out. I met some really nice students who were so helpful in answering my questions, and telling me all about the different activities at SFA. Did you know that last week was their Homecoming?? They had a parade and a bonfire (I just thought there was another Dragon in the neighborhood).
There are so many things to see and do on the SFA campus, they have their own Barnes and Nobles, a Movie Theatre, and even a Rec Center where students can work-out, everybody wants to be buff like a Dragon!
At SFA there is a place for everyone to fit in with over 200 different student organizations on campus and Greek Life, you are bound to find something. LumberJacks are sooo cool!!!I cannot wait to see what I will learn today!

Everyone was so helpful!

First Stop LUMBERJACK country!!

This morning as I was checking my email I received an email from the Raguet Principal Mrs. Shofner. I was so excited to see that the Raguet Elementary office and administrative staff is sending me to visit  Stephen F. Austin State University www.sfasu.edu so that I can learn about College. I can hardly wait to visit this beautiful campus that is in my own backyard, well not literally my back yard is not THAT big!
I have heard so many great things about this University and the beauty of the campus and its facilities.
I think I will make my first stop the Baker Patillo Student Center. I bet I can get some good information about the school there, and some Chick-Fil-A if I am hungry ( This Dragon is always hungry!!).
The best part of this trip is, I will get to share what I have learned with my friends at Raguet Elementary, I cannot wait!
